Warm greetings to you and welcome to our website. There are many things that people look for in a church. Some are searching for a vibrant worship experience and strong Biblical preaching. Many want to make a difference by joining with other people of faith who are working for peace and justice in the world. Some are looking for the safe and stimulating environment of a church family in which to raise their own family. Some simply desire to be a part of a warm, caring community where they are known and accepted for who they are. Others say that they need a stimulating intellectual environment where education in the faith is a lifelong opportunity and challenge. If these are the characteristics of the church you are looking for, your search is over. Consider this your invitation to come and experience life at St. Mark’s. We will welcome you in our midst. And you will be glad you came.

The tee shirts that the congregation at St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church will wear to church on June 3 are all the colors of the rainbow and feature the international symbols for “man” and “woman” arranged in pairs: a man and a woman, two men, and two women. The slogan underneath reads Standing On The Side of Love.
St. Mark’s Presbyterian church in Tucson is one of a national group of churches calling themselves the “More Light Presbyterian Church.” More Light churches are committed to spiritual, ordination and marriage equality for lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and trans-gender persons in the Presbyterian USA church and for equal rights in civil society.
Marriage equality for all people is the particular goal of More Light Presbyterian USA churches in 2012. They have cited three basic tenants:
1. We believe that homophobia, not homosexuality, is a sin.
2. Love is a gift from God. No loving God would give anyone a gift in order to punish or humiliate them.
3. The covenant of marriage is a sacred trust between two individuals. Any couple able to forge that bond deserves the benefits of marriage as well as the ability to express that sacred trust freely and equally in the Church and society.
During the 9:30 am service, several members of the congregation who have been ordained in St. Mark’s Presbyterian church and who are gay will be telling their story. Among the speakers will be current interim pastor, Scott Opsahl.
That's right..... St. Mark's is not only a place to pray and play, but a place to party as well! The Session just thought it was time for everyone to kick back, relax, laugh, and enjoy each other's company as well as partake of some great food. Such a gathering is a great time to give thanks for the past year in the life of our church. As if that's not enough reason to party, we also came up with a theme: Founders Day Extravaganza. The organizing meeting that constituted St. Mark’s (then called Mountain View Presbyterian Church) took place in the original sanctuary (which is now Geneva Hall) on June 8, 1948. That first meeting turned out to be quite a memorable (and funny) event and you will not be able to forget it either after seeing it re-enacted in a comical skit! Some of St. Mark’s best thespians are preparing their lines already!
Now let’s talk about food! Scott Gibson and his cooking crew, will be providing appetizers, beverages, and dinner! That’s always a winner! You don’t have to bring anything! We’ll cover the food. The suggested donation on the day of the party is $5/person or $10/family. You can’t beat that anywhere!
One of the highlights of the evening will be a Dessert Contest with a chance to win a gift certificate to Williams Sonoma! Categories will include pies, cakes, cupcakes, etc., The judges will be our hardworking cooks! And what's a party without music? You will be delighted by the Joyful Noise Chorus, the Church Ladies, the Celtic Choir, and sing-alongs. The party is scheduled for Saturday, June 2, with festivities starting at 5:30 PM.
Whether you are a long-time member, new member, friend of the church, or frequent visitor, we hope you will join the fun. This is a family friendly event too - there will be fun activities for the children. Questions? Call your party planners, Gwyn Roske (731-1646) or Vanessa Quinn (744-1343).
St. Mark’s is a More Light church whose session (governing board) has adopted a policy of welcoming all people -- including lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons -- into full participation and membership. This includes the right to serve as ordained officers if called by God and elected by the congregation. St. Mark’s is part of a network of More Light congregations in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) who are working for full glbt inclusion and leadership throughout the denomination. St. Mark's is the only More Light congregation in Tucson.
